Kevin and I started sorting his overflowing bookshelves a day or two ago -- pulling out all the books too young for him to send to Kien and Gabe (many of them will be very useful to Cathi for homeschooling!), sorting out books for other purposes, and arranging the remaining books by topic on his shelves. We had a small stack of books to read before making a decision, and we made it through all of them this morning. His crowded shelves now have room to accept new books!
BTW, his reading has improved dramatically since I was with him three months ago!!! He reads SOOOO well now. He was a bit behind in reading and math this year due to his previous Montessori education. It's not that he had a bad education, they just didn't teach him what he needed to know for a normal public school second grade. He learned all kinds of wonderful things in Montessori that are beyond a first grader -- like astronomy, geography, cursive, and multiplying without memorizing the tables. I am sure he has forgotten that skill by now.
Whenever we are in the car, he wants to play the alphabet game, and he reading skills are good enough that he is VERY good at the game!
This afternoon, Kinga dropped us at a shipping store to send off two large boxes of books and one of clothing to Kien and Gabe. When finished, we had some frozen yogurt at a unique store where you build your own treat among a couple dozen flavors and myriad toppings. You pay by the weight of your creation.
On the way home, we encountered turtles at the pond where we saw the Great Blue Heron before! They were many feet apart in the middle of the pond, and swam DIRECTLY TO Kevin!!!!!
Obviously, they are used to being fed by little children!
If they were disappointed, it didn't match our disappointment! It was so sad to have nothing for the turtles!
So, after dinner, the four of us walked back to the market street for gelato, and we took some crackers with us. But no turtles. Kevin tossed the crackers in the water anyway for them to find on their own.
